چکیده

The conclusions drawn by Auty et al – that the development and persistence of psychopathic personality characteristics is most likely down to both genetic and environmental factors – are well-judged, modest, and consistent with their results. Their report highlights a large and potentially important dataset, and the topic of intergenerational transmission of personality characteristics is underresearched. Unfortunately, although it was not mentioned in the limitations, I am concerned that the results of the analysis remain open to confounding by genetic factors. For example, the mediation model involving disrupted employment as an intergenerational mediator of psychopathic trait from one generation to the next (male and female) was statistically significant. But, in finding that unemployment was a cause of psychopathic traits in the offspring, given that some genetic influence to psychopathy exists, and that correlation between genetic risk for psychopathy and unemployment is likely, the conclusions seem vulnerable to the alternative explanation that it is shared genetic material, not psychosocial risk factors, being measured in the models. This could be an important threat to inference. For example, in the study of intergenerational transmission of conduct problems by D’Onofrio et al, the investigators identified evidence for complete confounding of environmental risk factors by shared genetic liability. Readers should be cautious, therefore; bringing about changes in personality structure in the offspring of psychopathic individuals by intervening in the parental psychosocial environment may be injudicious.

In the first randomised controlled trial of naltrexone implants, Kunøe et al identify two inclusion criteria in their methodology: being an in-patient and being 18 years or above. In the results, the term ‘ineligibility’ is used to describe not completing treatment, ...

Antidepressants in rapid-cycling bipolar disorder.

Amsterdam and colleagues frankly acknowledge the multiple methodological deficiencies of their paper. However, this does not prevent them from drawing unfounded conclusions. In his editorial, Thase makes the same error in accepting conclusions that are clearly not warranted by the data presented. What is most striking about Amsterdam et al’s paper is that the results of lithium, fluoxetine and ...

Psychological autopsy study of suicide in Karachi

We congratulate Khan et al for their study on suicide, a topic that, to our knowledge, has not been formally studied in Pakistan. Their findings are very significant. First, 96% of suicide victims had a diagnosable psychiatric condition with a very high prevalence of depression. We know that depressive illnesses are steadily rising; in 2001, the World Health Organization warned that by 2020 dep...

Interpretation of ecological data

We read the debate on antidepressants and suicide with interest, especially the issue concerning the importance of controlling for possible confounding variables in ecological studies and the associated difficulties in drawing conclusions from such ecological observations. One potentially important confounder, which has been overlooked, is the size of the family of origin. Birth cohort studies ...
